BUFE GERMANY

A TASTE OF GERMANY


German cooking owes its main features to centuries old customs stemming partly from courtly and clerical tradititon and partly from that of the middle classes and the rurol population.  In addition, Germany’s neighbors, especially her Eastern areas made a strong impact on her cooking and the Hugunots , who were influnced to settle in Brandenburg in the seventeenth century by the great elector Frederich William , who had an unmistakable influence on its development.  Good food has always been appreciated in the German states , as evidenced by one of the oldest works on cookery “DAS BUCH VON GUTER PRISE” ( the good food book) , a parchement manuscript written in WUERZBERG before 1350.  The Westphalian ham was already a popular delicacy by 1400 , when the city of Dortmund wanted to make a special gift to Emperor Sigmund .  It decided to present him with twelve smoked hams.

Where else is there as wide a selection of hearby for inoceous dishes such as noodles dumplings and the like.  The Numberg lebkuchen and Munzen bakers were already known as confectionary of the middle Ages.  Their recipes are still in use today with very little alternation.  The wide range of regional specialties is matched by  the great  variety of excellent wines including German champagne , many kinds of beers , which are well known throughout the world and limpid fruit and grain spirits.  The various types of breads are still a must on todays table.

Today, many restaurants and cities like Munich , Franfurt , Hamburg are international centres with some of the finest restaurant.  The Munich “October fest “ which is celebrated every year from the last weekend in September and goes on for 2 weeks and brings people from all over the world to enjoy this musical Food fair , not to forget the well known “Bockbier Vom Fass” (extra strong draft beer).
